CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Therapeutic Completion

The walk back from Felix’s combat training felt different. There was an electricity in the air that had nothing to do with Kira’s powers and everything to do with the tension that had been building between the three of us for the past hour. Madeleine had been touching me every chance she got during training, Kira had been conducting her “scientific experiments” on my nullification field, and I’d been trying very hard not to think about how good they both looked in their workout clothes.

“My room,” Madeleine said as we approached the dormitory building. It wasn’t a question or a suggestion - it was a statement of intent.

“Madeleine,” I started to say, but she cut me off with a look that made my mouth go dry.

“Evan,” she said, her French accent making my name sound like a promise, “I have been in isolation for days. All my life without safe human contact, without intimacy, without feeling like a real person. And now I have you, and I have Kira, and I am not going to waste another moment pretending that I don’t want what I want.”

Kira took my other hand, her fingers intertwining with mine. “She’s right,” she said. “We’ve been dancing around this all day. Most of the week, really. And I’m tired of dancing.”

“The Academy monitors everything,” I said, though even as I said it, I knew it was a weak protest.

“Let them monitor,” Madeleine said, pulling us toward the dormitory entrance. “Let them study their therapeutic data. I don’t care what they call it or how they justify it. I know what I need, and I know what I want.”

Madeleine’s room was on the third floor, in a section of the dormitory that housed students who required special accommodations. Her room was larger than the standard dormitory rooms, with a private bathroom and what looked like medical monitoring equipment built into the walls. But right now, all I could focus on was the way she was looking at me as she closed and locked the door behind us.

“Finally,” she breathed, turning to face us. “Privacy.”

The moment the lock clicked, something shifted in the room. The careful restraint we’d all been maintaining, the polite boundaries we’d been observing, the Academy’s rules and regulations - all of it fell away, leaving just the three of us and the desire that had been building between us.

Madeleine reached for the hem of her training top and pulled it over her head in one smooth motion, revealing the black sports bra underneath. Then that came off too, and she was standing there, topless and beautiful and completely unashamed.

“Madeleine,” I said, my voice coming out rougher than I’d intended.

“Touch me,” she said, stepping closer. “Please, Evan. I need to feel your hands on my skin.”

I reached out and cupped her face in my hands, marveling at the simple miracle of being able to touch her without fear. Her skin was warm and soft, and when I ran my thumbs across her cheekbones, she closed her eyes and made a sound that was part sigh, part moan.
